BAROQUE PERIOD

In the seventeenth century King Louis XIV of France introduced the Western world to a lavishness in the decorative arts that became the Baroque style, which is an elaboration of the Italian and other Renaissance styles. This style, characterized by more complex, symmetrical, elegant motifs and moldings of mostly classical origins, and required the most skilled craftsmen from throughout Europe to execute them. Materials were more elaborate and reflective, often including gold, silver, and crystal. Although this style influenced architecture and design throughout Europe, the French version is considered the standard that the others in Europe followed. This dominance, influence, and generous support of artisans and craftsmen led to French leadership in design and the decorative arts that continued well into the twentieth century. The English styles of Jacobean, William and Mary, and Queen Anne are their simpler versions of Baroque, as is the early Georgian style of Thomas Chippendale. Because of the elaborateness and complexity of the style, the French Baroque has been copied or adapted less frequently than the English versions.
